South African Wine Glossary

South Africa’s wines reflect a unique combination of ancient soils, ocean-cooled climates, remarkable biodiversity, and a strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

B

Biodiversity (Cape Floral Kingdom)
The Western Cape lies within one of the world’s smallest and richest plant kingdoms. This extraordinary biodiversity contributes to the unique character and ecological importance of the region’s vineyards.

Bush Vines
Low, free-standing vines (also called goblet-trained) that are not supported by trellises. Common in older vineyards, they produce lower yields and concentrated fruit.

C

Cape Doctor
A strong south-easterly wind that cools vineyards, reduces disease pressure, and helps maintain freshness and acidity in the grapes.

Cape Winelands
The main wine-growing region of South Africa, known for diverse climates, ancient soils, and exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Bordeaux-style reds..

Certified Heritage Vineyards
Part of South Africa’s Old Vine Project, recognising vineyards that are 35 years or older, often producing wines of exceptional depth and character.

Chenin Blanc (Steen)
South Africa’s most widely planted grape variety. Known for styles ranging from fresh and vibrant to rich, textured, and age-worthy.

D

Dry Farming
Growing vines without irrigation, relying on natural rainfall. Common in older vineyards and associated with deeper root systems and concentrated fruit.

F

Fair Trade / Ethical Certification
Programs ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and community development for farm workers and their families.

Fynbos
The native shrubland vegetation of the Western Cape, famous for its incredible plant diversity. Often associated with distinctive herbal and floral notes in nearby vineyards.

I

Integrated Production of Wine (IPW)
South Africa’s sustainability certification programme, promoting environmentally responsible farming, water conservation, and reduced chemical use.

O

Old Vine Project (OVP)
An initiative that identifies, preserves, and promotes vineyards older than 35 years. Old vines typically yield lower quantities but produce wines with greater concentration and complexity.

P

Pinotage
South Africa’s signature red grape, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Styles range from fresh and fruit-driven to structured and age-worthy.

S

Single Vineyard
Wine made from grapes grown in one specific vineyard site, highlighting unique terroir characteristics.

Sustainability Seal
A label indicating that the wine meets South Africa’s national standards for environmental sustainability and traceability.

Stellenbosch
South Africa’s most renowned wine region, known for Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-style blends, and premium Chenin Blanc.

Swartland
A warm, dry region celebrated for old vines, dry farming, and innovative, terroir-driven wines.

T

Terroir (Cape Context)
The combination of ancient soils, maritime influence from two oceans, mountain elevations, and cooling winds that give South African wines their distinctive balance of ripeness and freshness.

W

Wine of Origin (WO)
South Africa’s appellation system, indicating the geographic origin of the grapes. Categories include Region, District, Ward, and Single Vineyard.

Ward
A smaller geographic unit within a district, often associated with specific soil or climate characteristics (e.g., Elgin, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge).
